Questions about chargeback prevention

Chargebackify prevents disputes before they are filed. Network alerts arrive roughly 40 minutes before a cardholder's dispute reaches your acquirer; inside that window a refund resolves the case and the chargeback is never recorded. Everything below explains how that works, what it costs, and where it does not help.

The basics

Not answered here? Ask us directly.

What is a chargeback alert?

A chargeback alert is a notification sent by Visa RDR, Ethoca or Mastercard when a cardholder disputes a charge with their bank, delivered before the dispute is formally filed. Acting inside that window, typically around 40 minutes, means the chargeback is never recorded against your account.

How is prevention different from fighting chargebacks?

Representment fights a dispute that has already been filed. Even when you win, the chargeback still counts toward the ratio your acquirer monitors. Prevention resolves the case before it is filed, so it never enters that number.

How long does setup take?

Most Shopify merchants are live in under an hour: install the app, connect your processor, then run the rule set in dry-run mode for two weeks before any refund is issued automatically.

What does Chargebackify cost?

There is no monthly platform fee. You pay 20% of the value of each dispute prevented, dropping to 14% above the volume tier. Nothing is billed for alerts that arrive too late to act on.

How it works

What happens between the alert and the refund?

The alert arrives, is matched to the exact Shopify order, evaluated against your rules, and either refunded automatically through your processor or sent to the approval queue. This runs in seconds.

How long is the prevention window?

Roughly 40 minutes between the alert and the dispute being filed, though it varies by network and issuer. Automation exists because that window is too short for manual review at any volume.

What is dry-run mode?

The rule set evaluates every alert and logs the decision it would have made without issuing a refund. Most merchants run it for two weeks before going live.

What if the order cannot be matched?

Nothing happens automatically. Unmatched alerts are surfaced for review rather than refunded on a best guess.

Pricing and billing

How is the success fee calculated?

The fee is a percentage of the order value on each dispute that is prevented in time: 20% at standard volume and 14% above the higher tier. If an alert arrives after the filing window has closed, there is no fee.

Is there a monthly fee or a contract?

No monthly platform fee and no contract on the standard plan. Enterprise customers can request an annual agreement where procurement requires one.

What counts as a prevented dispute?

An alert that was matched to a Shopify order and resolved, by refund or by another rule action, before the dispute was filed with the network.

Do I pay for alerts you cannot act on?

No. Alerts that arrive outside the window, or that cannot be matched to an order, are reported but never billed.

Product and control

Does Chargebackify block orders at checkout?

No. It acts after the order is placed, when a dispute is raised. There is no checkout friction and no customer is ever declined.

Can I control which refunds are automatic?

Yes. Rules are conditional on order value, fulfilment state, product and customer history. Anything above a threshold you set routes to an approval queue instead of refunding.

Which alert networks are covered?

Visa RDR, Ethoca and Mastercard alerts, taken directly rather than through a reseller.

Does it work with more than one store?

Yes. Multiple Shopify stores and processors run under one account with per-store thresholds, owners and reporting.

Setup and integrations

How does the Shopify integration work?

Install from the Shopify App Store and grant order and refund scopes. Orders sync so alerts can be matched, and refunds are issued through your existing processor credentials.

Which payment processors are supported?

Shopify Payments, Stripe and PayPal, plus a REST API and webhooks for anything else.

Is there an API?

Yes. The REST API exposes alerts, matched orders, rule decisions and refunds, and webhooks push each event as it happens.

Does anything change for my customers?

No. Nothing is added to checkout and no customer-facing behaviour changes; refunds appear exactly as they would if you issued them by hand.

Still deciding?

Install in dry-run mode and watch two weeks of your own alerts before a single refund is issued.
