What the thresholds actually do

Crossing one is not a warning letter. It is fines, reserves, and eventually a conversation about whether you keep the account.

Winning a dispute does not remove it
Representment recovers the money. The chargeback still counts toward the ratio in both programmes, which is why recovery alone never fixes a threshold problem.
The count is what is measured, not the value
A $12 dispute damages the ratio exactly as much as a $900 one. Low-value disputes are the cheapest thing to prevent and the most worth preventing.
Your acquirer sees it before you do
Programme reporting reaches the acquirer monthly. By the time you hear about it, you are usually two months into the pattern.
Prevention is the only thing that lowers it
A dispute stopped before filing never enters the count. That is the entire mechanism, and there is no other one.
